Meet the Captains, numero three! We’ve met Peter and Lydia. Now it’s time to introduce our third Startup Drinks Captain, Alayna Holkesvig. She co-runs a DJ business with her mom, she’s a Dragon at Minnesota State University-Moorhead studying music industry management, and she – along with Lydia- took home first place at Women’s Startup Weekend with her idea for a website to document adventures called Outside the Grid.

AlaynaHSCome hang with Alayna on May 19, at Startup Drinks! Six more days – Sign up here!

Alayna Holkesvig: DJ & Dragon

Q: Do you have a nickname?

A: Lanie is the nickname my family calls me. However, my soccer friends from MSUM know me as AJ.

Q: Any awkward tattoos? Please describe in detail.

A: I actually don’t have any tattoos. There are plans to get a half sleeve in the future though!

Q: What is one of the most influential books you’ve ever read?

A: I’m not much of a reader, which is probably a terrible thing to admit… Although, I did just read the biography of Hillary Clinton for a college course and thought it was very interesting. I learned a lot about the traits I want to develop to become a better leader.

Q: What is one of the coolest places you’ve traveled to?

A: I would have to say New Orleans is the coolest place I’ve been to. The culture in the French Corridor is so intriguing and the energetic atmosphere is unlike any other city I’ve been to in the U.S.

Q: If you could describe your startup as an animal what animal would it be?

A: I would have to say a bird. Our startup will come alive when it finds similar birds (a flock), or followers in this example that are into traveling and sharing their stories. These people, or I guess in animal terms, birds, will be our brand leaders and get the word out there about our company. Our business has just started to take flight and we are hoping it’ll soar high and fly far! (Trying to make this as bird-like as possible haha).

Outside the Grid

Alayna & Lydia reppin’ the OTG. (Outside the Grid)

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?

A: It’s so hard to pinpoint one exact location! However, I would have to say Norway. I found out a couple years ago that my family has an abandoned farm there that is accessible only by boat since it’s located in a fjord. I think it would be so cool to explore my ancestors’ homeland!

Stay tuned for one more Meet the Captains article, and come hang with all our Captains on May 19 at Startup Drinks!
